Barefoot Nomad
Corporate travel and accommodation management
Barefoot Nomad is a web application for organisations to manage staff travel end to end. Employees raise trip requests, their line manager approves or declines them, and the travel team books the accommodation — with every step tracked, commented on and reported in one place.
No signup required — sign in as a requester, a manager or a travel administrator and see the same data from each side.
What it does
Originally built as a team project at Andela in 2019, now rebuilt as a single full-stack TypeScript application.
Role-based access
Six roles, from requester to super administrator, with a real line-manager hierarchy deciding who can see and approve what.
Trip requests
One-way, return and multi-city itineraries, submitted for approval and tracked through their whole lifecycle.
Manager approvals
Line managers review, comment on, approve or decline the requests raised by their direct reports.
Accommodation booking
Browse hotels and rooms, check availability against travel dates, book, then rate the stay afterwards.
Notifications
In-app and email updates whenever a request changes state or picks up a new comment.
Travel insights
Trips per period, most-travelled destinations, and spend broken down by department.
How signing in works
You can create an account with an email address and password, or sign in with Google. Both routes give you the same application.
If you choose Google, Barefoot Nomad requests three standard sign-in scopes only — openid, email and profile — which it uses to identify you and fill in your name, email address and profile picture. It cannot read your Gmail, Drive, Calendar or contacts, and it does not post anything on your behalf.
Accounts can be protected with two-factor authentication using any authenticator app. You can ask for your account and data to be deleted at any time by emailing raymwauradev@gmail.com.

About this project
Barefoot Nomad is a personal portfolio project built and run by Raymond Mwaura. It is a demonstration rather than a commercial service: the hotels, staff and itineraries in it are fictional sample data, and the demo accounts reset every night. Please don't enter real travel documents or confidential information.
